This past weekend I went on a trip down to Blacksburg, VA to meet up with my old Virginia Tech college buddies. I got down there pretty late on Friday so I managed to not drink too much on my first night in town. Saturday morning while my friends were sleeping in, I woke up at my usual 6:30am time and decided to go for a run around the Virginia Tech campus.
We were staying at the Main Street Inn right downtown, so I decided to take off running towards the drill field and see what was going on down there. I never thought it would feel so good to be back on campus, but I really missed the place. I ran around the drill field to Burruss Hall and the memorial from the 2007 Virginia Tech shootings. I continued back to downtown and then run towards my old townhouse up Lee Street.
As I was running I kept thinking about calm Blacksburg is in the summer and how refreshing it was to get out of the big city. I also thought, “Damn, I forgot how freaking far up Lee Street we used to live!” My legs were burning on the slight inclined 1 mile stretch to my old place. At one point I thought about turning around, but I pushed just a little bit harder and made it to the top.
After I snapped a quick pic of my old place, I turned around and started back down Lee Street. I realized it would be downhill the whole way back, so I kept a relaxed running pace the rest of the way. Before I knew it my RunKeeper app told me “You’ve completed 3 miles.” Where had the time go? I was so focused on seeing Blacksburg getting to these different locations that I lost track of how far I was running. This was a good thing!
I kept running until I hot the official 5K mark (3.1 miles) and then a little cool-down walk to finish it off. So glad I was able to squeeze in a run and get to see the campus again, it had been way too long!
