After the great success of the 2011 Yuri’s Night party, Dennis Bonilla, Tim Bailey and I teamed up again to make the 2012 event into more of a DC citywide celebration. We knew we needed the help of a promotions company and partnered up with One Love Massive to help coordinate multiple simultaneous events. We grew the party from one party at Science Club (approx. 300 people), to 6 parties across DC and Virginia (1000+ people).
The main goal of these events was to get people asking “Who is Yuri Gagarin?” and “Wow, space is pretty cool. Where can I learn more?” It’s exciting to see people catch the “Space Bug” for the first time. We helped to facilitate this by providing spacey swag (stickers, pins, giveaways from sponsors), had T-shirts for sale, and by projecting human spaceflight themes images and video through the night.
Science Club Party
Science Club was such a big part of helping us nail the first year with such an amazing staff and positive attitude towards science and space education. Because of our strong relationship with Science Club, we considered that event the homebase of Yuri’s Night DC. Science Club staff worked hard to make sure that the nights events would run smoothly, their bar tenders were prepared, and everyone was ready to celebrate in the name of Science! In addition, the DJ, Video Killers, was a big part of maintaining the theme throughout the night. They played spacey themed music, helped create spacey visuals for projection, and kept the party going strong all night.
The Dunes, The Continental, and The Blue Banana Parties
When we decided that 2012 was going to be a bigger project, we teamed up with One Love Massive to help coordinate parties throughout the city. With their great connections and promoting skills, they helped us to get other bars on board. They coordinated “spacey” drink specials, swag distribution, t-shirts for the staff, and to promote the overall events.
Lucky Bar Party
In addition, we were able to team up with Lucky Bar just a week before the events to add another party location. We provided them with swag to give out throughout the night, t-shirts for their staff, and helped to promote the Lucky Bar events throughout the week leading up and the night of.
“Yuri was a Skydiver too!” Event
This event was help at Virginia Skydiving Center in Petersburg, VA. The event was to 1) get people to try skydiving for the first time and 2) teach people about when Yuri Gagarin was returning to earth, he was ejected from his capsule and floated down to earth under canopy. A small, but really fun event!
